What a free-shipping progress bar actually does
Shipping cost is the single most common reason online carts get abandoned. Shoppers reach the final step, see a number they were not expecting, and leave. Most Shopify stores already have a free shipping threshold in place to prevent exactly that — and then never tell the shopper how close they are to it.
A free-shipping progress bar closes the gap. It sits in the cart drawer and shows, in plain language, exactly how much more is needed: "$8 away from free shipping", with a bar that fills as the cart grows. When the threshold is cleared, it switches to a confirmation state so the shopper knows the reward has landed.
This is one of the most reliable average-order-value tools available on Shopify, and it works because it is information rather than pressure. The shopper already wanted free shipping. They simply did not know they were eight dollars away, and once they do, adding one more item is an easy decision that costs you nothing in margin — you were prepared to absorb the shipping at that spend level anyway.
How BORING builds it
BORING builds it as a native theme section that updates live as items are added, removed, or changed in quantity. It reads your real threshold rather than a hardcoded number, so it stays accurate if you change your shipping settings. It handles the edge cases too: discount codes that reduce the subtotal, items that do not qualify, and multi-currency stores where the threshold varies by market.
- Lightweight theme section, no app subscriptions
- Matched to your store's fonts, colors, and button style
- Built and tested in a duplicate theme before it goes live
- Tested on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and desktop
We also handle the state most implementations forget — what the bar says once the shopper has passed the threshold. A bar stuck at 99 percent, or one that keeps asking for more after the reward is earned, undermines the trust the feature was meant to build.
Built and tested in a duplicate theme, checked on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and desktop, delivered with screenshots. One flat $99, live in 24 to 48 hours, one revision round included.
